Are They Just Lucky? Or Is It Mindset?

How Scarcity, Abundance, and Negative Bias Shape Your Reality

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and thought, They’re just so lucky? Maybe they always seem to be in the right place at the right time. Or they land amazing opportunities effortlessly or they are the person who hits at the slot machines everytime they go to the casino? Or maybe they have a sense of peace and confidence you can’t quite figure out. Is that luck or is that mindset?

But what if I told you that what looks like luck is actually something else—something within your reach?

As a therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how the way we think and the beliefs we carry shape our reality. Our mindset—whether we lean toward scarcity (lack of) or abundance—can impact our ability to heal, grow, and find balance in life. And, more importantly, we’re all wired with a built-in tendency called NEGATIVE BIAS that can make it feel like life is working against us, even when it’s not.

Let’s explore how these forces play out in your life and what you can do to shift from feeling stuck to stepping into abundance.

Scarcity vs. Abundance: The Mindset Divide

Imagine two people applying for the same dream job. One person, let’s call her Jane, approaches the opportunity with excitement. She believes she has valuable skills to offer, and even if she doesn’t get this job, she knows more opportunities will come her way.

The second person, Brenda, applies with a completely different mindset. She’s anxious, convinced this is her one shot. She worries she’s not good enough, and deep down, she believes good things don’t happen to her.

Jane operates from an abundance mindset—the belief that opportunities, resources, and success are plentiful. Brenda, on the other hand, is stuck in scarcity thinking—the belief that there’s never enough, and once an opportunity is gone, it’s gone forever.

Which one of these mindsets do you relate to more?

A scarcity mindset makes us feel small, stuck, and constantly afraid of losing what we have. It fuels comparison, imposter syndrome, and a feeling that we’re falling behind. Abundance, on the other hand, allows us to take risks, trust the process, and remain open to possibilities we might not even see yet.

The best part? Your mindset is changeable.

The Role of Negative Bias in Keeping You Stuck

If you’ve ever felt like life is harder for you than for others, it’s not just your imagination—it’s your brain’s negative bias at work.

Negative bias is our tendency to focus more on negative experiences than positive ones. It’s an ancient survival mechanism that kept our ancestors alert to danger. But in today’s world, it can keep us locked in cycles of fear, doubt, and scarcity thinking.

For example, if nine people compliment you on your work but one person criticizes you, which one do you dwell on? If you have a day filled with small wins but one thing goes wrong, what do you remember most? That’s negative bias shaping your perception.

The good news? Once you recognize it, you can actively shift it.

Here’s how:

  • Pause and reframe. When you catch yourself focusing on a negative moment, ask: What’s another way to look at this?
  • Celebrate small wins. Your brain needs repetition to rewire. Start consciously noticing and celebrating the good.
  • Surround yourself with support. The people you spend time with shape your mindset. Choose those who uplift you and believe in growth.

Building a Resilient, Abundant Mindset

So, how do we move from feeling unlucky to feeling empowered?

1. Recognize Your Patterns

Start by noticing your default reactions. Do you assume the worst? Do you catch yourself saying, I’m just not that lucky? Awareness is the first step toward change.

2. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful tool to counteract negative bias and scarcity thinking. Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for. They can be small—sunshine on your face, a kind word from a friend, a moment of peace. Over time, this rewires your brain to see more abundance.

3. Reframe Setbacks as Growth

Instead of seeing failure as proof that you’re unlucky, view it as part of the journey. What can you learn? How can this experience make you stronger? Resilience is built in these moments.

4. Take Action, Even When It Feels Scary

People who seem “lucky” often take more chances. They put themselves in new situations, make connections, and keep going despite setbacks. The more you step outside your comfort zone, the more opportunities you’ll create.

5. Invest in Your Healing and Wellness

Your mindset isn’t just about thinking differently—it’s about nurturing your emotional well-being. Therapy, self-care, and personal growth work all help shift deep-seated scarcity beliefs into an abundant perspective.

Final Thoughts: You Are Not Stuck

Luck isn’t just about chance. It’s about mindset, action, and resilience. You can train your brain to see abundance. You can break free from scarcity thinking. And you can move through life with more ease, balance, and confidence.

You are not behind. You are not missing out. You are on your own path, and there is more ahead for you than you can even imagine.

Let’s step into it—together.
